Meeting the Needs of Our Aging Members

As the demographics of the Mill Neck community shift, the needs of its members are also changing and expanding. It is important to recognize the new challenges that participants of our programs face as they age, so we can provide additional support services to accommodate the expanded set of needs.

Unfortunately, the scope of services currently available to aging adults is fragmented and not easily accessible to the marginalized population that we serve here at Mill Neck. Some of these challenges include language barriers and a lack of healthcare access and literacy, which negatively affect the individuals in the community, as well as their families. The impact of these inequities often present themselves later in life, and are compounded by years of systematic neglect and a lack of accessible learning resources.

Since 2021, Mill Neck Services (MNS) has received grants from the Mother Cabrini Health Foundation. These funds help to develop expanded services to accommodate the complex needs of the Deaf and Hard-of-Hearing population, and cater to aging individuals who may be faced with a variety of health conditions.

Under the MNS Seniorcare Expansion and Empowerment (SEE) initiative, our primary focus is to raise awareness of the challenges faced by residents of Nassau and Suffolk County. Marginalization and social isolation are health issues, and it is crucial to create pathways that promote inclusion within the aging Deaf and Hard-of-Hearing community, and among agencies serving the community. We aim to empower individuals by providing a variety of resources, including technology, sign language and other support services that promote participation and independence.

In order to fulfill these objectives, it is essential to cultivate a direct care workforce that understands the unique needs of the aging Deaf and Hard-of-Hearing community. We welcome interns and partnerships to join our efforts, as we create collaborations with various pipelines into Human Services and expand our reach to potential labor pools.
