Welcome to Mill Neck Manor School For the Deaf’s Special Needs Program. Mill Neck Manor School for the Deaf program provides services for students who are deaf and have additional disabilities. Mill Neck Manor School For the Deaf has the advantage of being a small school and being able to provide a small student to staff ratio classroom setting. Each Special Needs Classroom is based on the unique needs of every student. We pride ourselves in working as a team to make sure every student’s needs are met. Each student’s Individualized Education Plan (IEP) is incorporated into the curriculum and used when deciding which classroom setting is best for each student.
The philosophy of our Special Needs Program is to build on what our students CAN do rather than focusing on what they are unable to do. We focus on building on our student’s strengths. We provide our students with the tools necessary to achieve all of their goals. One of our goals is to optimize language development in whatever way is most effective for the individual child. We provide our students with all means of communication. We use ASL, natural gestures, fingerspelling, body language, visuals, communication devices, listening, lipreading and speech. We tailor our communication approach to best fit the needs of each student. Parent collaboration and communication is a key component of our Special Needs program. Parents are also supported through the OPWDD application process.
Our IEP team works together to group students into classrooms based on levels of academic achievement, social skills, physical development, management needs, behavioral needs, and communication needs.
