Spring Swing Golf Tournament
Mill Neck's Fourth Annual Tournament a Swinging Success!

The Mill Neck Family of Organizations hosted their fourth annual Spring Swing Invitational Golf Tournament on May 24, 2010. The event, benefiting Mill Neck Manor School for the Deaf, the Mill Neck Manor Early Childhood Center (ECC) and Mill Neck Services for Deaf Adults (MNS), was held at the beautiful North Hills Country Club.

Golfers enjoyed brunch, a day on the course with legendary sportscaster and author Len Berman, golf challenges and food and refreshments on the 7th, 10th and 12th holes. Following the tournament, guests gathered in the dining room for cocktails, a Champions Dinner, honoree recognition, a hilarious speech peppered with sports history and highlights from games and interviews by Berman, raffle prizes, a silent auction, a student art exhibit and golf awards.

The event honorees, Gloria Llewellyn, Mill Neck Manor Educational Evaluator; Teresa Reid, Community Relations Manager (CRM) for Barnes & Noble Manhasset; and Janis Schoen, Director of the Locust Valley Library, were recognized for their ongoing support of the Mill Neck Family of Organizations. In keeping with this year’s tournament theme of “Celebrating Literacy,” the trio received awards designed by Mill Neck Manor School for the Deaf student Takashi Hamano, who incorporated each honoree’s love of reading, hobbies and interests into the colorful illustrations.

Gloria Llewellyn, who has worked for Mill Neck for nearly 28 years, was honored for her dedication as the school’s Educational Evaluator and commitment to the literacy committee. Introduced by Janis Buonincontri, a Mill Neck Manor alumni student, and Francine Atlas Bogdanoff, Assistant Superintendent, Gloria was met with a standing ovation and heartfelt thanks from the crowd. Buonincontri, who once worked as Gloria’s teacher assistant at Mill Neck Manor School, spoke about how her own love of books was guided and encouraged by Gloria, while Bogdanoff discussed how the educator is a mentor to students and staff alike.

Teresa Reid was honored for her numerous efforts on behalf of Mill Neck Manor School, which have grown into a vital facet of the school’s literacy-based curriculum. Thanks to Teresa, Barnes & Noble has sponsored a number of author visits and holiday book drives. Teresa was introduced by Librarian Donna Argeroplos, who spoke of her endless commitment and support, and Nancy Leghart, Director of Advancement, who recounted the early days of meeting the CRM and how she was immediately aware of Teresa’s incomparable kindness and helpful nature.

Janis Schoen was honored for her dedication to the Mill Neck Manor Work-Study Program, which provides volunteer opportunities for student interns in competitive fields. As the Director of the well-known Locust Valley Library, she not only makes sure the building is home to a variety of great books and workshops, but that it is also a successful workplace for Mill Neck student interns. Janis was introduced by Teacher Kelliann Kleva and student Kelly Kildare, who is also an intern at the Library. Both spoke from the heart about the Director’s continuing support and the opportunities that have been generated from the Locust Valley placements.

Following the honoree recognition, several golfers won awards in categories such as: Men’s Low Gross: Jim Furey, Jr.; Men’s Low Net: Lloyd Klauser and Mike Duffy; Ladies Low Gross: Myrt Minicozzi; Ladies Low Net: Barbara Horton and Carole Daniello; Longest Drive: Russell Decker and Barbara Horton and Closet to the Pin: Jim Furey and Myrt Minicozzi. Tournament finishing touches included bookmarks designed by Mill Neck Manor School for the Deaf students and golf course cookies made by consumers from the Mill Neck Services Day Habilitation Center.
