Music
Patrick is a busy four year old who loves to sing his favorite songs as he goes about his day. What is so remarkable about his love for music? Patrick is profoundly Deaf.

Patrick came to Mill Neck as a toddler, and since that time has shown amazing progress. Patrick’s teachers and family attribute much of his success to the school’s innovative music program.

The music program at Mill Neck not only allows our Deaf students to process, experience and appreciate music, but also opens avenues for communication and language, which directly affects children's social, emotional and academic growth.

Studies have shown that music can be a powerful tool to increase language and literacy skills. Researchers have found that music training can positively affect oral language development in Deaf children. Properties of music such as rhythm, accents, tempo and repetition organize behavior toward educational goals by supporting the structure of language. For our Deaf students, music helps them understand simple pre-reading concepts which are often difficult to teach.

The music program serves approximately 40 preschool and kindergarten students through music instruction and enrichment opportunities. The program also provides music and literacy training for parents of children enrolled in MNM's program for Deaf infants. MNM's educators participate in extensive professional development which will enable them to use music in all subject areas to help students improve literacy and language acquisition.

At MNM, we believe that all children have the inherent ability to respond directly to music experiences, regardless of auditory ability. Patrick’s mother recently commented how happy she is to hear her son sing – something she never thought she would be able to do.
