Literacy Collaborative
Research shows that children who are Deaf or Hard of Hearing are at risk for falling far below grade level in literacy standards - a fact that can have life-long implications. Mill Neck Manor School for the Deaf implemented the Literacy Collaborative six years ago to ensure that our students have the same literacy skills as their hearing peers.
The Literacy Collaborative is a framework for teaching literacy designed by experts at University of Ohio and Lesley University that uses intensive, research-based methods of instruction while focusing on the complex skills and strategies of reading, writing, and oral language.
The results of the first six years of the program at MNM have been remarkable, with 80% of students in preschool through fifth grade now meeting literacy standards in reading.
Amanda, a sixth grader at Mill Neck, is one of those students. Although her first language is American Sign Language, she has already surpassed the national average reading level of Deaf adults. Amanda is an avid reader and loves to discuss her favorite books and authors.
The Literacy Collaborative, which currently serves 50 students in our Deaf Education Center, is comprised of the following components: Classroom instruction and enrichment; professional development for classroom teachers and literacy coordinators; parental training and involvement.
The Literacy Collaborative is an effective tool that helps students at Mill Neck acquire the literacy skills that are so crucial to their schooling and their futures. Because of the intensive classroom instruction, on-going professional development, and consistent parental involvement that the Literacy Collaborative provides, students at Mill Neck have shown remarkable progress towards achieving the same level of literacy as their hearing peers.
Program Cost: $26,500 per year.
