The Mill Neck Foundation, a Recognized
Service Organization, provides programs of support and service
in the areas of education, technology and ministry. In order
to accomplish this, Mill Neck Foundation relies on individuals,
congregations and corporations for support.
Mill Neck Foundation develops and disseminates Deafness-related
resources. The Mill Neck Foundation for Deaf Ministry also
grants funds to institutions, programs and projects with the
goal of enhancing Christian ministry with the Deaf.
Current Grants
• Elim Christian Fellowship, Augusta, Maine - Support for Northern New England Deaf Retreat for Deaf, hard-of-hearing and hearing people serving Deaf ministries in the New England region.
• Center on Hearing and Deafness (CHAD), West Chester, PA - Support for a Deaf-Blind Pilot Independent Living Skills Program
• Mill Neck Services for Deaf Adults, Mill Neck, NY - Support for a week-long summer camp experience for multiply-disabled Deaf adults.
• Lutheran Association for Special Education, St. Louis, MO - Purchase 15 HEARIT amplification systems for use with 124 students
Personnel - Individual Support - Scholarship Program
• Scholarships for Lutherans Attending CITI, Church Interpreter Training Institute, Fort Wayne, Indiana - Support for Lutheran participants from US and abroad to attend CITI and a special scholarship for one international student to be used for the 2008 summer program.
Interpreter Services - Captioning
• Cross of Christ Lutheran Church for the Deaf, Edmonton, Alberta - Provide sign language interpreter services for the Dist. Convention.
• Interpreter/Captioning - National Youth Gathering 2007, St. Louis, MO - Provide interpreting and captioning services.
• International Lutheran Deaf Association, Silver Spring, MD - Provide sign language interpreter services for ILDA Convention.
• Atlantic District LWML, Coram, NY - Provide two sign language interpreters and interpreter services for the Fall retreat.
Partnership with Christoffel-Blindenmission, West Germany (CBM) to support projects in: Holy Land Institute, Salt, Jordan, Jordanian, Ethiopia, Nicaragua, Philippines and Tanzania
Partnership with the Atlantic District - LCMS, Bronxville, NY - Support for the Atlantic District Deaf Mission Developer.
Grant Guidelines and Application
Grant Guidelines
Grant applications are considered and evaluated based on
the following guidelines:

The Sponsoring Organization must be a NOT-FOR-PROFIT Organization. Except in extraordinary circumstances, grants are limited to 501(c)# organizations. Grants to new organizations, which have not yet received not-for-profit status from the IRS, must be channeled through and sponsored by an existing 501(c)3 organization.

The Sponsor must be a credible, trustworthy, accountable organization that uses qualified individuals to administer and implement the activities described in the application.

Grant projects must address Deaf-related issues through Christian service. Projects must work to eliminate the circumstances that keep the Deaf population from experiencing the fullness of life made possible through Jesus Christ.

The focus of the application should be on new initiatives, directions, or methods. Grants are not provided to support the normal, ongoing operation expenses of an established project or ministry.

Grant applications must be received between January 1st and March 1st of the grant funding period.

The grant application must be submitted in the format provided by Mill Neck Foundation and must follow the steps in the application.

Grant funding is for one year, from July 1st through June 30th of the following year.

Grant applications for capital improvements or for ongoing support will not be considered.

Grant applications should reflect direct service to individuals who are Deaf. Applications which are heavily weighted in the area of administration or overall management are unlikely to be approved.

Should products or materials be produced with the funds granted, the Mill Neck Foundation is entitled to an agreed upon number or percentage of products/materials produced.

Projects should show evidence of having the capability of becoming self-supporting and/or coming to a natural conclusion based on a specific product or service.

Project activities/products should acknowledge/display "Mill Neck Ministries" as supporter.
Grant Application
Grant proposals must be submitted in the following format and sequence. Proposals should not exceed six pages (8.5" x 11" paper).

Application - Must not exceed
six pages. Two copies must be submitted.

Cover page - Provide on the
cover sheet the following information:

Name of project

Sponsoring organization/congregation

Address, phone/fax number of sponsoring
organization/congregation

Project coordinator, if different
from Executive Officer, and phone/fax number for that
person

Date of application

Letter of authorization - This
letter should be written on the sponsoring organization/congregation
letterhead and must indicate awareness and support for
the proposed project. This letter should be signed by
the Executive Officer of the sponsoring organization.

Proposal statement - In a brief
paragraph, give a description of the proposed project.

Amount of the grant request
- Indicate the amount needed from the Mill Neck Foundation
to run the project. The percentage of support for the
project to be provided by the Mill Neck Foundation.

Information about sponsoring organization/congregation
- Provide a brief introduction, history, purpose, size
and important facts about the sponsoring organization/congregation.
Provide information on how the sponsoring organization/congregation
will be supportive of the proposed project.

Needs this project is designed to
meet - Describe what needs this proposed project will
be designed to meet.

Project time period - The project
will run shorter than the one year funding cycle (a one
time event such as a conference or youth event); will
run for the one year funding cycle; or will be an ongoing
project.

Anticipated outcome goals or results
of the project - List one or more specific outcomes
that will be accomplished by the end of the grant period.
Each goal should be specific, measurable and attainable.
Following each outcome, describe how it will be measured.

Steps in the process - Time
line and schedule of major steps in accomplishing the
anticipated outcome goals.

Anticipated number of people served
- Provide information regarding what people or groups
will benefit from the project.

Briefly explain how this proposed
project does or does not meet each of the following criteria:

John of Beverley Award
The Mill Neck Foundation for Deaf Ministry awards the John of Beverley Medal to a person or organization in recognition for accomplishments that significantly improve the lives of Deaf people. The medal was created in1958 by internationally renowned sculptor Donald DeLue and is named for John of Beverley, and English clergyman who lived in the late seventh century. Mentioned by the Venerable Bede in his "Ecclesiastical History of the English Nation," written about 734 A.D., this English Bishop was the first person on record in the Western world to work with the Deaf.
Candidates for this prestigious medal may be nominated by an individual, congregation or group. Nominees may be of any educational or professional background. The award is given without regard to race, color or religion.

Many Sunday Schools and Church Schools across the country have named Mill Neck as their "giving project." Generous contributions, through weekly chapel offerings, Lenten, Advent or special offerings, have been sent to help us continue our ministry with Deaf people.

Youth Outreach Program
Sign Camp
This week long day camp, held on Mill Neck Manor's campus, was designed for hearing children (ages 8-12 & 13-16) who are interested in learning sign language. Campers will learn the manual alphabet, animal signs, family signs, color signs, food signs, songs and a lot more! Campers will interact with Deaf students from Mill Neck’s summer program and classes are led by Deaf instructors with hearing teacher assistance. Deaf Camp
This is a five day "sleep away" summer camp for Deaf children from the tri-state area, ages 8-12, at Camp Ma-He-Tu in Bear Mountain, New York. Campers will enjoy kayaking, sailing, swimming, canoeing, arts and crafts, hiking, archery, fishing, cookouts, campfires and more. Christian values and teachings are a part of the camping experience. To request prayer for yourself or a loved one, please complete the following prayer request form. Your request will automatically be forwarded to Pastor Wrede for regular prayer time at Mill Neck Manor. All fields on this form are optional.
Sunday Worship Services
The Mill Neck Chaplain provides Sunday services at two Deaf congregations in New York. All services are offered in sign language and spoken English. Deaf and hearing people are welcome. Weekly Bible study opportunities are also offered. If you are interested in the Bible study schedule, please email worship@millneck.org.

Mill Neck Campus Services
Every Monday morning at 8 am, services are provided for the Mill Neck staff in the beautiful John of Beverly Chapel in the Manor House.
